Blog Tour & Interview - Other Breakable Things by Kelley York & Rowan Altwood

Hey, guys! It's Steph and MaRanda. We had the opportunity to read this amazing book and we can't say enough about it (Review)!

Kelley & Rowan were amazing enought to answer a few questions that we had, so take a look...

S-n-M Book Blog – Interview

What was your inspiration for writing this book?

Kelley: I’ve wanted to write something with Rowan for years now, so I think it just so happened we got this idea for a euthanasia book we were both interested in writing. She created Luc and had me create Evelyn for him.

Are any events in the book inspired by real life?

Kelley: Not exactly. I’ve always been fascinated by the Death with Dignity act, Dr. Kevorkian, and the general idea of assisted suicide for terminally ill patients. We watched a really great documentary a few years back called How to Die in Oregon.

If you could listen to one song while writing this book what would it have been?

Kelley: Tiny Dancer by Elton John.

Rowan: David Bowie’s Life on Mars.

Does it take a lot out of you as a writer to compose such an emotional story?

Kelley: I refer to it as character bleed, when you’re so in tune with the feelings of something you’re writing that you physically feel it. I did my share of crying during certain scenes.

Rowan: Yes, it can.

Was it so hard at times that you had to step away?

Kelley: I wouldn’t say hard, but it does get emotional. I find some of my best scenes happen when they hurt.

Rowan: No, I thrive on drama. ;P

Will any secondary characters get a story?

Kelley: There’s a very minor character toward the end of the book I was fond of and felt like, “This guy has a story.” So maybe? Never rule anything out. There is another book I have an inkling to write that ties into this one just a little.

What are your writing rituals, if you have any?

Kelley: I don’t think I really have any. I like it to be quiet, when possible. Outside noises (TV, music with words, etc.) are distracting.

Rowan: I’m the opposite. I like background noise. There’s usually a documentary playing while I write.

How is co-writing different from writing alone?

Kelley: When writing alone, I get to shape my characters however I want. When writing with someone else—especially since everything about Luc came from Rowan—it’s kind of like roleplaying. Evelyn had to respond to the things he said and did, just like he had to respond to her.

Rowan: Co-writing, to me, means things actually get done because Kelley always pushes onward.

If you could give your readers one piece of advice, what would it be?

Kelley: General life advice? Use your voice. Speak up when you’re hurting or angry. Don’t let anyone silence you because your feelings matter. Writing advice? Keep at it. Keep creating something new; don’t let yourself get so held up on one project that you aren’t progressing.

Rowan: Uhhhh...Don’t ever think one cat will be enough.

SnM - Hahahaha! Thank you so much to Kelley York & Rowan Altwood!
